WINGMAN PROGRAMS |

|
The Wingman Program is a mentoring program for Brookland-Cayce High School students . The program was conceived in the fall of 1998 by then Foundation President Ed Kirkland. His goal was to develop a program that would provide a “wingman” for students who need extra support in their lives. ("Wingman" is an aviation term; a "wingman" is an airman who flies along side of another airman, and supports that airman in a potentially dangerous environment.)
The word "mentor" derives from the character, Mentor, as portrayed in Homer's Odyssey, who was entrusted with the education of Odysseus' young son, Telemachus. The term has been revived in recent years to describe individual instruction and role modeling outside the home and classroom. The Wingman Program establishes a one-on-one relationships between a B-C student and an adult mentor. The goals of the Wingman Program are to enhance self-concept, decrease discipline referrals, reduce absenteeism, and motivate the student to improve academic performance and become a responsible adult. The Wingman Program consists of volunteer adult mentors who meet with and serve as positive role models for identified B-C students. The Foundation also sponsors the Junior Wingman Program. Selected eleventh grade students are trained and supervised by teachers and counselors to serve as mentors for ninth grade students through an organized program of activities. Adults interested in volunteering as a Wingman mentor should contact the BCHS Foundation. |
