Miss Rosalie Antoinette Shull was born May 27, 1909 in Brookland, SC (now West Columbia). She attended Brookland School, the town’s first public school, and graduated from New Brookland High School on June 7, 1927. She then entered the University of South Carolina, and graduated in 1931 with an AB Degree in English.
Following graduation she was hired in 1931 as substitute teacher at the newly opened Brookland-Cayce High School, and never worked anywhere else. She soon became a full-time teacher and taught for four years. In 1937 she was asked to become the school’s first Librarian, a position which she held for 36 years. She started the B-C Library with 704 volumes and room for 15 students. After becoming Librarian, she attended summer school sessions at the University of South Carolina, and earned a Certificate in Library Science in 1940. Under her leadership, the library moved to the second floor of the school, grew to a book collection of 3,686 volumes, four daily newspapers, the county weekly, and 31 magazines. In 1956, the library moved to its first planned facility on the first floor of the new North Wing. Later, audiovisuals and microfilms were added. At the time of Miss Shull's retirement, the library had expanded to include 11,516 books, eight newspapers, and 65 periodicals. The B-C Library was a great part of Miss Shull’s life, and she lovingly contributed to its growth during her long tenure. She was noted for her high expectations of students and was anxious to provide them with the tools they needed for completing every assignment. Miss Shull was a lifelong member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church in West Columbia, and taught Sunday School there for many years. Miss Shull retired in 1973 after a career of more than 40 years at B-C High School. A few years prior to her retirement, she purchased a new custom-built home in West Columbia. She lived there for more than 30 years, until declining health required her to move to the Lowman Home in White Rock, SC. She died May 5, 2005, just a few weeks short of her 96th. birthday. |
