Mrs. Alice Boney Rabon was born in Blythewood, South Carolina, and she graduated from Blythewood High School in 1926. She earned a Liberal Arts Decree from Columbia College and a Masters in Education from the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Rabon did other graduate work at the University of North Carolina, at William and Mary College, and at USC.
Mrs. Rabon taught for 35 years in schools in South Carolina, including Hartsville, Dentsville, and at University High School in Columbia. She came to Brookland-Cayce High School in 1949, joining the Math Department. She advised the Mu Alpha Theta, the math honor society. She also taught Distributive Education and advised the DECA Club. She became Head of the Math Department in 1959, serving in that capacity her last years at Brookland-Cayce. She also was a guidance counselor and, as DECA adviser, supervised the canteen. Alice Rabon was active in professional organizations: a life member of the National Education Association, South Carolina state representative to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, two years on the executive board of SCEA, and a member of Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International, an honorary teachers' society. She was also a 25-year member of Girl Scouts of America. Mrs. Rabon was married to Mr. E. Blease Rabon, and they were active as members of First Baptist Church of Columbia. She shared herself in school, community and church activities. Her students have given high praise to Mrs. Rabon. She has been described as very competitive, inspiring her students to follow her example. The DECA group won numerous awards. She had a vigorous personality, which encouraged her students to seek success. One former student described her as "strong-willed and domineering, but I loved her dearly. She was a dynamic force in my life." Mrs. Rabon died in 1965, ending a far-reaching career. The 1966 Bearcat was dedicated in her memory. Its tribute concluded with "... she carved her own soul's statue." |
