Inducted 2008
Sara Mae Pitts Lindler was born in Newberry. She earned an AB Degree from Winthrop College and her Master's Degree in Education from the University of South Carolina. She also studied at the Bethel Maine National Training Laboratory and at Peabody College.

Mrs. Lindler taught school in Georgia and South Carolina for 43 years. Her teaching career began in Clemson, and after teaching in Georgia, she also was a faculty member in Prosperity and in Hollywood. She taught English for two years at Brookland-Cayce Junior High School and then moved to B-C High were she taught math for fifteen years. For six years she also served as Head of the Math Department, a position she held until retirement in 1971.

Mrs. Lindler was more than just an excellent math teacher. She participated in extracurricular activities by sponsoring the Girls Activity Club, serving as advisor for Future Teachers of America and Mu Alpha Theta, the national math honor society, among other duties.

Mrs. Lindler belonged to the Brookland-Cayce Education Association, the South Carolina Education Association, and the National Education Association. She was elected Secretary of the Teacher's Council and President of the South Carolina Mathematics Council. She was very active in Cayce United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and the Lydia Women's Bible Class, and played the piano for services.

Mrs. Lindler passed away at the age of 93 in 2001. Her husband George, whom she married in 1939, was also an educator, serving as a teacher, principal and superintendent. He survives her at the age of 103, and resides in the Lowman Home in White Rock.

Mrs. Lindler had a passion for math and her students. The 1960 Bearcat was dedicated in her honor. Its tribute described her as a "guiding light to all her students with a friendly smile and a helping hand." Her life exemplified the single quote from her senior yearbook at Winthrop: "Sara is one girl you can depend on whenever and wherever you meet her. A living model of unselfishness, gentleness, sincerity, good judgment, a logical mind, and an amiable disposition are the qualities combined to make her a most desirable friend."

There is little question that many of her students and colleagues would agree.
